5 lbs. Turquoise Crystal Glaze. Cone 10 ox (Dry Material)
Description: This is an easy crystal glaze to achieve. This is not a "crystalline" glaze. It does not require a fancy firing schedule. The crystals are food safe.
Mixing and Application: Add water and hydrate to 40 on your hydrometer. This can be dipped or sprayed. And, only screen through a 60 mesh once. Dip for a count of 4.
Important info about Firing: After your glazes are dried out you'll want to fire on a medium speed firing schedule. Be sure to have a self-supporting cone 10 in the peep hole when you fire this glaze. You'll want to be watching the kiln when it gets close to temperature. I program my Cone Art Kiln so it has a 20 minute soak at the end of the firing. This way I can watch the cone and turn the kiln off when cone 10 is half way over (pointing at 3:00). More great info is below:)
1) Porcelain works the best. Works on bmix and stonewares. We bisque porcelain to cone 010.
2) Use a hydrometer to get these glazes thinned to 40 on the hydrometer.
3) Use a 60 mesh bowl screen to screen them.
4) Dip for a 2 or 3 count. (not too thick-)
5) When loading your electric kiln remember to space your work apart slightly so the heat can reach the center of the kiln. (notice I always place cookies under my tests to make sure I don't mess up my kiln shelves. Once I know a glaze better I know if I can fire without placing them onto cookies).
6) Fire in an electric kiln that's meant to go to cone 10. If the walls on your kiln are thin it will take longer to get to cone 10 and it will wash out the color and crystals. We use a Cone Art Kiln which is designed and built to get to cone 10.
7) Get to cone 10 by going at least 500 degrees an hour.
8) Use a Self-supporting cone 10 witness cone in the spy hole and make sure your cone is bent halfway over when you shut down.
9) Cool normally. You just don't want to thermal shock your wares.
