Description: One of the nicest copper induced purple/red glazes. This glaze has now been revised to be Tom's Purple Haze. Applied over Black Magic Slip this glaze has a brighter purple color. It's only copper-red without the slip and it doesn't look great.

The image of the Groovy Cup has Black Magic under the Purple Haze. Tom Coleman's Bottle has Purple Glaze applied over Porcelain (without Black Slip). This glaze is not in Tom's glaze book.

Mixing: One order of 5 lbs. dry makes about 1 gallon of liquid glaze. Add water and screen 2 times through an 80 mesh screen. 52-54 on the hydrometer.

Application:

1) First apply Black Magic Slip to your greenware when it's bone-dry before you bisque fire. We like to spray it on. Make sure it's not too thick if you're going to dip the slip on. It will turn out a little different. Be Sure to test everything!

Note: you can also apply BMS to bisqueware and re-bisque it to cone 010.

2) WE BISQUE ALL PORCELAIN TO CONE 010. Important. Cone 04 is to high to bisque. It's only meant for groggy stoneware bodies. So, bisque the BMS onto the work to cone 010.

3) Once the BMS is Bisque fired on, you can now apply any of the copper-purple glazes.

Apply Purple Haze: Dip or spray. This glaze is nice when it has a bit thicker application. Stable at cone 10 reduction.

Firing: Cone 10 reduction.

Important Note: Remember to run a few tests before applying any unfamiliar slip or glaze to lots of work. Take notes. Find the correct application for your work with the way your kiln is being fired.

What Our Clients Are Saying

"I appreciate being able to continue exploring the techniques Tom Coleman has introduced to me at his workshop. Being able to order the same beautiful slips and glazes has helped me develop my own body of work in high-fire porcelain."
