Cockscomb Slip Tool
Description: The Cockscomb leaves behind a few raised, smooth cord-like edges as you gently drag the tool through the slip. Use a quick, more direct motion. Or, a wiggly wave to experiment with your marks. Use these tools to make marks when your wheel is stopped. Or, as it's turning for horizontal lines.
Special note: As a glaze artist it's all about making marks and ridges that will hold the glaze and show me it's full potential when it's applied thick, medium and thin. I love these slip tools because they make great marks with whatever random movement I make with them. I'm not great with painting or making marks. My goal was to make a tool I'd have some level of success with while making marks.
About the tools: My MFA is in mold making and metal casting. These skills are great for making tools. These are individually hand-crafted in a wax positive and cast in soft silicone. Each one of my slip tools are unique and create fluid, sensuous lines in thick, decorating slip. My tools are molded in porcelain to keep them as smooth as possible. Therefore, they have a bit of residual material on them.
Please don't leave these soaking in water. They're made with good, waterproof materials, but you'll need to be gentle with them. Sometimes the black comes off of the silicone. (it seems like nothing sticks to silicone..) The black plastic can be left there or trimmed away if necessary.
