Tom Coleman Experimental Shino Workshop (50% deposit)
Experimental Shino!! is at the top of our list for this Workshop with Tom Coleman. With the materials in the mines changing over the years, Tom's needed to get even more creative in his approach to Shino. You'll be surprised at what he's discovered and ready to share with you. (We'll have a few other glazes with us to bring some extra color into the kiln openings). El Dorado H.S. has a 16 cu ft Fiber Geil Gas Kiln. We'll fire two Cone 10 firings during this 5 day workshop.
Workshop Location:
El Dorado High School
1651 Valencia Ave.
Placentia, CA 92870
Workshop Fee: $750.00
$375.00 is your 50% deposit to hold your place in the workshop. The balance of $375.00 is due during the week of the Workshop.
Bring to the Workshop: Bisque ware no larger than the following dimensions: 8"x 8"x 8" No Plates or Bowls or Sculptures that are difficult to fire at a workshop. Think of it this way, if you bring 8 small cups, you'll probably get all 8 cups into the kiln and get to experiment with all the glazes and techniques Tom has for this workshop. If you bring one big bowl - it may not get fired. Workshops are about learning new techniques to apply to your work (not creating work to sell when you get home). We want to get everyones work into the kiln so we can all learn from the Glaze Results. Bring 5 - 8 bisque fired work with each piece not being bigger that 8 inches in any direction.
We encourage you to bring work created in any of the following Cone 10 Clay Bodies: Coleman Porcelain or Bmix. Only bisque fire this work to cone 010 (this is very important). Also bring any items you're used to having with you when you glaze.
Day 1 (Monday July 11th): Arrive at 8:00 am with your bisque ware. Enjoy Coffee and Donuts brought in by Tom. Demonstrations with Tom start at 9:00 am. Tom demonstrates glaze techniques. This includes dipping and spraying. Other techniques we've been experimenting with throughout the year include adding natural elements to the surface. We'll spend the first day glazing, and we'll all load a Geil Gas Reduction kiln with all of our participants work. Kiln will start candling to be brought up in temp first thin in the morning on Day 2.
Day 2 (Tuesday July 12th): Arrive at 8:00 am and go into reduction on the gas kiln with Tom. Tom will give throwing demonstrations while we all fire the kiln throughout the day. The kiln will shut down sometime toward the end of the day.
Day 3 (Wednesday July 13th): Arrive 8:00 am. The kiln is quick-cooling during the morning. More glazing takes place in the morning as needed to get ready to reload the kiln. Kiln Opening by 1 - 2:00 pm. Reload and start candling the kiln. Tom will continue to demonstrate on the wheel with throwing techniques and slip decorating as time allows on this work day.
Day 4 (Thursday July 14th): Arrive at 8:00 am. 2nd kiln firing goes into reduction while Tom continues to demonstrate.
Day 5 (Friday July 15th): Arrive at 8:00 am. Studio Clean up and getting ready for the next kiln opening. Tom continues to do demonstrations while the 2nd firing cools. The 2nd Kiln Opening follows and Final Critiques for the Workshop.
Shipping Information: Ship your work to the El Dorado High School Address above about 1 month before our workshop date.
