Tom Coleman and Amy Kline are focused on creating slips and glazes that incorporate good firing science in cone 10 reduction. During the year they develop slip tools, slips, and new reduction glazes. Their workshops focus on New approaches and Concepts to set your work apart from other peoples work. Tom will throw and decorate with new Slip Tools and Magic Slip. Tom will also demonstrate techniques for spraying slip and spraying glazes. Everyones work will be fired to cone 10 reduction in a Geil Kiln.

Glazes For 2019: Leopard Spot Shino, Hammer Tone, Black Ash with Color Washes, Copper Red and Copper Purple. And, applying Color Slip and shifting your color palette.  We'll have a total of 8 glazes with multiple effects for our two cone 10 reduction firings.

Bring (or ship) up to 25 pre-created bisque fired pottery for glazing and firing during the workshop week. Each location has a different size kiln. I will email you detailed information about the location once you've registered. If the kiln is larger we'll suggest you bring more work.

Special Note: Bring cups, tea bowls, small bottles, medium sized work, etc. The more work you can bring or ship the better.

Important Information about Bisque Firing: For this firing workshop you need to create work in Cone 10 Clay Bodies. If you're working in Porcelain: bisque fire to cone 010. We DO NOT recommend using B-Mix - it won't produce the same results we are are getting with our new glaze formulations.

Monday March 11th: Tom and Amy will start the workshop in the morning with participants Spraying Black Slip onto some of the bisque ware you've brought with you. After lunch we'll load and start the bisque while participants spend the afternoon inside with Tom while he demonstrates throwing, altering and decorating with slips and tools on the wheel.

Tuesday March 12th: We'll unload our bisque in the morning and Tom will demonstrate rolling, dipping and spraying glazes. Tom and the crew spend the morning with Hands-on Instruction as you learn to apply glaze onto your work for the best results. (This hands-on instruction makes all the difference in learning to glaze). After lunch on Tuesday the crew will load our glazed wares into the Geil Reduction Kiln.

Note 1: We'll glaze half of the work you brought for the first firing. Save the other half of your work for the second glaze firing.

Wednesday March 13th: The kiln will be on pilot the night before so we'll go into reduction sometime between 8:00 - 10:00 am. Tom continues to demonstrate on the wheel while the kiln fires. Our participants will learn how to read the kilnand go into reduction. Along with a quick-cool technique to brighten the color of the glazes. This also makes it possible to get into the kiln Thursday morning.

Thursday March 14th: Tom will be trimming and applying slips onto work that's leather hard (different techniques). We'll open the kiln with a Glaze Critique by mid-morning. This is an important day of Critique and continued Hands-on Instruction for applying glazes. We'll glaze the rest of the work people brought for the workshop with a new way of looking at the work and at the glazes. After lunch the crew will load the kiln for the second glaze firing while Tom demonstrates more advanced, sculptural techniques on the wheel.

Friday March 15th: We'll fire the second glaze firing throughout the day. Tom will continue with the work he's been throwing and decorating during the week. We'll complete the day with quick-cooling the kiln and meet at Don Ridley's home for a dinner party.

Saturday March 16th: Kiln Opening with a Glaze Critique. We'll pack up our wares to ship. If you have your work packed and ready for shipping Amy will take your boxes over to be shipped after the workshop.

Workshop Fee: $1000.00

When we receive your 50% deposit of $500.00 we will send you a confirmation email. The remaining $500.00 is due at the time of the workshop. Your workshop fee includes your lab fees for firings and glazes.

Lodging is close by. We recommend staying at an Air BnB. We've had several participants find great places to stay at an excellent price by searching with the Air BnB.
