5 # Translucent Porcelain (dry)
Description: Formulated to throw like a dream. This body pulls well. It's nice and dense and holds a form. Follow the directions below to get it to the right consistency. Easy to throw a medium to thin wall for the best translucency when fired all the way to cone 10. It also fires well in an electric kiln to cone 6 - 10. But, for translucency it's all about the melt. The hotter the better. Anyway, this is one of our favorite throwing bodies.
Mixing: Add just enough water to make this a thick slurry and use a mixing paddle on a drill. We push the thick slurry through a 60 mesh bowl screen twice to get out most of the lumps. Pour this thick slurry into a White Pillow Case that's been turned Inside Out (so you don't have to deal with the seams-lol). I try to fill it about 2/3rds of the way so when I lay it flat ont0 an absorbent surface (a hot driveway works well) it doesn't spill out past the end of the pillow case. Keep an eye on it. Flip it often. Check the edges if it gets too firm in the corners and push those parts into the rest of the wet porcelain and try to get it to set up as much as possible to a good wedging consistency.
Special Note: Translucent Porcelain needs a special glaze that doesn't craze. All of the celadons I make and sell on my website are formulated to also be applied to Translucent Porcelain without crazing.
